SWANTON - With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Benoit O. "Ben" Deziel, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather, dedicated builder, and cherished community member, who gently departed this world on March 7, 2026, at the age of 97.
Ben was born on October 4, 1928, in Joliette, Quebec, where his journey of hard work and resilience began. As a teenager, he faced the heart-wrenching loss of his mother during childbirth, stepping up with remarkable strength to help his father raise his siblings.
In his early twenties, Ben met the love of his life, Yolande (Lauziere). United by their dreams and tireless work ethic, they immigrated to the United States with little more than a shared vision for their future. Ben found his calling in the construction industry, starting his career building trusses before joining forces with his dear friend, Raymond Couture, to establish Ben & Ray Construction. Together, they built homes for families, reaching heights of more than 50 homes a year during their peak, and later ventured into high-end developments.
Beyond the homes he built, Ben built bridges of kindness throughout his community. He was a man of remarkable compassion, often lending a hand to those in need, particularly through his support of the local food shelf. Ben's generous spirit and ability to bring joy to others defined his character. He loved unconditionally and created a warm, welcoming environment that drew people to him. Known for his gentle nature, he never raised his voice but instead uplifted those around him with his presence.
A devoted Catholic and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus for over 74 years, Ben exemplified faith, service, and camaraderie. He was a beacon of light, bringing laughter and joy to gatherings, and he thrived in the company of friends and family. The joy of nature filled his heart, and he passionately embraced activities like snowmobiling, enjoying the great outdoors well into his 90s.
Left to cherish his memory is his children, France Hackett and her husband Ken, and Michael Deziel; grandchildren, Melanie Ignazio and her significant other Jimi, Justin Hackett and his wife Rachael, and Michelle Bailey and her husband Michael; great grandchildren, Summer Hackett, Brandon Bailey, and Dylan Bailey and his significant other Alyssa; siblings, Monique Deziel and her husband Claude, Jacques Deziel, Lucien Deziel and his wife Denise, Lise Roy, Allain Deziel, and Francine Deziel; and many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Ben was predeceased by the love of his life, Yolande Deziel; his parents, Nelson & Florisca (Poulette) Deziel; and his siblings, Denise Teteault, Fernand Deziel, Claire Nault, Roger Deziel, Pauline Deziel, Real Deziel, and Claude Deziel.
Ben's family would like to thank everyone that helped show him love and care including his beloved friend whom he shared a special bond with, Dena St. Amor; friends through the Knights of Colombus, especially Marcel, Luke, and the late Bernard; his neighbors, Glen & Trish Vaillancourt, Joel & Chris Clark, Dr. Taylor & Marshia Yates, Gary & Cindy Gibson, Joan Machia, and Michele Bombardier; and the nurses and doctors from the Northwestern Medical Center.
In keeping with Ben's wishes, friends & family are invited to his life celebration to include a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Nativity, Canada Street, Swanton, VT.
For those who wish, contributions in Ben's memory may be made to your local food bank.
