Charlie Carpenter

August 9, 1937 — January 11, 2026

MONTGOMERY - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Horace Carpenter, affectionately known as Charlie, who passed away on January 11, 2026, at the age of 88, in his home in Montgomery.

He was born on August 9, 1937, in East Enosburgh, to the late Horace & Persis (Hammond) Carpenter. Charlie lived a life rich in passion, hard work, and community spirit.

Raised in East Enosburgh, or "over East" as he would fondly say, Charlie developed a profound love for the outdoors that shaped both his personal and professional life. It was in high school that he met his soulmate, Patricia (Pattee) and they married on December 20, 1958. Together, they built a loving family in Montgomery while owning and operating Carpville Farm for many years. Charlie was a man of many talents, working farming he always had multiple jobs throughout his life, from brush hogging and sales to real estate pursuits. He was also a skilled carpenter and ran Montgomery Contracting with pride, demonstrating to his family the importance of dedication and craftsmanship.

Charlie's work ethic was legendary; he often reminded those around him "can to can't, from the time you can see till the time you can't." Yet Charlie's life was about more than just work. He found joy in hunting and hosting, with a special fondness for deer hunting that he cherished in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. In 1972, he created "Camp," a beloved place for family gatherings and cherished traditions-whether it was family dinners or lively sliding parties, Charlie thrived in the joy of bringing people together.

Charlie was a founding member of the Cold Hollow Barons Snowmobile Club, and former member of the local sportsman club. In retirement, he and Pat dedicated countless hours to grooming snowmobile trails, ensuring others could enjoy the winter landscape as much as they did. His loyalty, honesty, and unwavering work ethic will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.

Charlie will be missed by his beloved wife, Patricia Carpenter; their children, Cathie Paradee and her husband Steven, and Michael Carpenter and his wife Linda; son-in-law, Scott Joyal; grandchildren, Ian Paradee and his wife Hannah, Nicole Paradee, Owen Joyal, Chase Joyal, Sydney Carpenter, and Cole Carpenter; great grandchildren, Flynn Paradee, Collins Paradee, Hayden Lande, Skylar Lande, and Maxton Freeman; siblings-in-law, Marilyn Marshall, Carolyn Stetson and her husband Lloyd, and Charles "Bill" Pattee and his wife Rachel; several nieces & nephews, his close friend and hunting partner, Larry Gaudette; and his cousin, Roy Carpenter and his wife Linda. In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his daughters, Shari Joyal on June 17, 2022, and Kari Carpenter on April 27, 1970; brother, John Carpenter and his wife Betty; in-laws, William & Ruth Pattee; and brother-in-law, Bill Marshall.
