SWANTON - Donald C. Cobb, age 83, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026 at his cottage in St. Albans Bay.
He was born March 7, 1943 in Quincy, MA to the late Alfred & Alice (Thompson) Cobb.
Don spent his formative years in St. Johnsbury, VT, where he attended school, ultimately shaping the man he would become. After graduating high school, Don took great pride in serving his country in the United States Coast Guard. His time in service was just the beginning of a life filled with dedication and hard work.
After his service, Don embarked on an illustrious 61-year career in the auto industry, a journey that began as a sales manager at Vinton Motors in St. Johnsbury. His entrepreneurial spirit soon shone through as he purchased his first dealership, Benoit Motors, in 1977 which became Cobb Chevrolet Oldsmobile. Don's passion for cars led him to own and operate several businesses, including Dannemora Ford in New York and Cobb's Quality Used Cars in South Burlington, not to mention his venture with Coblev, Inc., where he imported and exported vehicles. Remarkably, Don continued to engage with the auto business right up until his passing, even selling cars on Facebook Marketplace.
Don was never just about business; he was an avid down-hill skier and a boating enthusiast - he loved going out on Lake Champlain. Additionally, he had a generous heart and an unwavering commitment to his community. He was a proud sponsor of the Santa Train and dedicated his time and energy to serving on the board of directors for both UVM Friends of Hockey and the VSO. His kindness and community spirit will be missed by many.
Donald is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Gerri Cobb; their son, Christopher Cobb; his sister, Louise Anderson; and several nieces, nephews, and friends in the community. In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his sons, Chad Cobb, and Brandon Cobb; and his sisters, Judy Hauf, and Lois Bimson.
Friends & family are invited to Don's life celebration to include visitation from 4-7:00 PM on Monday, August 3, 2026 at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, VT.
