Dr. Michael Burfoot

BERKSHIRE, VERMONT - Dr. Michael Burfoot, age 75, died at home September 25, 2007 after a dignified battle with cancer.

He was born July 6, 1932 in Hove, Sussex, UK, the son of the late Edwin & Doris (Ayling) Burfoot.

Michael practiced anesthesia 48 years in the UK, Montreal, Canada, Saudi Arabia and, for the last quarter century of his career, in Vermont. He was chief of Anesthesia at the Lakeshore General (Montreal) and Fanny Allen (Burlington, Vermont) hospitals. Lately, his most rewarding professional experience was with the charity, Orbis. Twice he practiced with the sight-saving medical team, once in Libya and once in Uganda. He also had a great passion for renovating and designing homes and did so three times in Enosburg Falls, complete with several ponds a piece!

Michael was a member of the Franklin County Medical Society, Enosburg Falls Lions Club, and St. Matthews Episcopal Church. He served as Berkshire Town Health Officer, and was a former regional state medical examiner

He leaves behind his devoted wife of over 53 years, Ruth (Young) Burfoot. They were married April 17, 1954. Their five children, Jacqueline Harvie and her husband Duncan of Toronto, Ont., Annette Burfoot and her husband Frank Burke of Kingston, Ont., Frances Burfoot of Essex, VT, Christopher Burfoot and his wife Maria of Warren, VT, and Jamie Burfoot and his wife Karen of St. Albans, VT; eight grand children, Adam and Claire Harvie, Jack, Mia, and Abby Burfoot, Josh Burfoot, Gabriel Burke-Burfoot, and Ben Burfoot; a sister, Christine McLean of Sussex, England; a brother-in-law and his wife, David & Brenda Young of Hampshire, England; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a loved grandson, Patrick Harvie.

A memorial service will be held Friday November 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Enosburg Falls, VT with Rev. Linda Maloney officiating. There will be no visiting hours.
