Edna Birch

September 6, 1944 — March 28, 2026

ST. ALBANS - Edna Birch, beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and nurse, passed away at her home on March 28, 2026, at the age of 81.

Edna lived a life defined by compassion, service, and deep devotion to her family and community. Edna was born on September 6th, 1944. Edna was adopted by Natalie and Herb Winters of Watertown, New York. Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Birch, who passed away in 2024. Together, they built a life rooted in love, resilience, and shared values. Edna missed him dearly and created a garden memorial for Don to honor his love of plants. Edna's broken heart from Don's passing likely contributed to her passing.

Edna is survived by her children, Michael Johnson of Kingsman, Arizona and Julie Johnson and John Raftery of East Fairfield, Vermont. Edna was a proud and loving grandmother to Olivia and Josh Raftery, Jeff Dutil, Colin Johnson, and Charlie Kniffen, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.

Edna dedicated much of her professional life to caring for others as a nurse, including her work with the Veterans Administration, where she served those who had given so much for their country. Her commitment to service extended beyond her career - she was also a respected Selectboard member in Milton, Vermont, where she worked to better her community with integrity and dedication.

At the time of her passing, Edna resided at Four Winds senior housing in St. Albans, Vermont. She found happiness in the simple pleasures of life, coffee, conversations with friends, gardening, crafts, reading and especially time relaxing with her beloved pets, Lou and Carla. She was also known for her love of Willie Nelson's classic country music and her keen interest in politics, often following the latest news on MSNBC.

Edna will be remembered for her independence, warmth, strength, and unwavering care for others. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched - through her family, her patients, and her community. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Edna's family encourages acts of kindness in Edna's memory or donations to a local veterans' organization or All Old Dogs Go to Helen.
