Eleanor Lena Hammond

October 9, 1934 — May 9, 2026

ENOSBURG FALLS - Our mom, Eleanor Hammond, the last surviving daughter of Lewis and Alice (Beakes) Longe passed away on May 9th, 2026 at The Villa, in St. Albans, Vermont, in her sleep after an extended period of declining health.

Mom was born in Enosburg Falls, Vermont on October 9, 1934. She was nicknamed Bobbi, by her older siblings, Irene Longe, Virginia Wheelock, Raymond Longe, Ted Longe, Douglas Longe, Daniel Longe, Wallace Longe, Bette Corrow and Linwood Longe, who pre-decease her.

As a young girl, Mom's father bought a farm two farms south of her future husband, The Hammond family farm, in Berkshire, Vermont. She became fast friends with Walter and his two younger sisters, Patty and Carol. She soon caught the eye of Walter. They were married on March 4, 1953. After marriage Walter was sent to the Korean war and returned in 1954 they moved to Texas while he finished serving the remainder of his time in the army. By 1956 mom and dad returned to Vermont with their baby daughter, Joyce.

Over the next seven years, Walter worked on the Hull farm in Enosburg Falls while Eleanor became a housewife and had two more children Timothy and David. The family then moved to Franklin where Walter ran the Olmsted farm.

In 1966 Eleanor gave birth to twins Jennifer and Jonathan. Also that year Walter broke his leg and overnight Eleanor learned how to milk the dairy cows and maintain the farm. From that point forward, she was Walters equal in the barn. We as her children often marveled over how she was able to maintain a meticulously cared for home and have fresh baked cookies ready for us when we got off the school bus each day. She did this all while working side-by-side with dad as a dairy farmer.

Mom was feisty and liked things, orderly and clean. No one dared to walk across her clean floors with their shoes or boots on. Her dishes were always washed and put away after every meal and her windows glistened with starched white curtains, framing them.

In 1975 mom and dad purchased their farm on North Road in Berkshire. She continued to work side-by-side with dad on the farm. In 1984 tragedy struck the family when our youngest brother Jonathan died in the automobile accident and a few years after that, dad had a stroke.

They sold the family farm to our brother David and moved to their beautiful home on the Water Tower Road in Enosburg Falls, Mom loved that house. She became known for her daily walks around town where she always carried a trash bag and cleaned up the litter along her walking route. She loved maintaining her potted geraniums and petunias in the front yard every summer. She was an avid reader and read every book in the Enosburg library and impatiently waited for new books to arrive. She completed hundreds of 1000 piece puzzles and would never redo the same puzzle once it was completed.

After our father passed in 2005, she continued to maintain her much loved home on her own until the age of 85 when she decided to move to the Homestead in Franklin, where she loved her little apartment. She lived there until failing Health forced her to move to Our Lady Of The Meadows in 2022, where she resided until the last two weeks of her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce LaMonda of Bakersfield, sons Timothy Hammond and his wife Wendi of Franklin and David Hammond and his wife Brenda of Berkshire and daughter Jennifer Blake and her partner Paul Blanchard of St. Albans, Vermont. Grandson Chris and Kelly LaMonda and their children Noah and Phoenix. Granddaughter Kerrie and Richard Ross and their children Nicholas and Ian. Granddaughters April and Chris Colman, and their children, Andrea, Haley, Kelsey, and Ronan of Hampstead North North Carolina. Granddaughter Danielle Hammond of Rutland, Vermont and Rebecca Hammond of Colchester Vermont. She is also survived by two sisters in law Verna Longe and Blossom Longe, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, to many to count! She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Hammond, son, Jonathan Hammond, and son-in-law David LaMonda in addition to all of her siblings and brothers and sisters in law.
