HIGHGATE SPRINGS – Evelyn C. Chevalier, age 97, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born in St. Albans on June 27, 1924, to the late Elie and Florence (Cadorette) Chevalier.
Evelyn grew up in Highgate Springs and graduated from St. Anne’s Academy in 1941. She was employed for 36 years at the U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Service in both St. Albans and Burlington, retiring in 1980. In her younger years she travelled extensively with her sister in the U.S., Canada and far away destinations such as Europe, Bermuda, and Tahiti. Evelyn was a talented painter and photographer and enjoyed painting and capturing scenic views. She loved to work, with the help of others, in her flower and rock gardens and to be outside exploring back roads and covered bridges. Her favorite place was spending summers at her camp, “The Shack” in West Swanton. She was strong-willed, smart, and independent.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Michael Chevalier and his wife Jean of Highgate Springs, Claude Chevalier and his wife Donna of Highgate Center, Anne Batchelder and her husband Daniel of Colorado Springs, Mark Chevalier and his wife Debi of Swanton, Denis Chevalier and his wife Martha of Williston, David Chevalier and his wife Kiersten of Swanton, Louise Loomis and her husband Kevin of Highgate Center, and Guy Chevalier of Swanton.
