RICHFORD - Gilbert Shover, age 99, passed away on Friday, April 12th, 2024, at his home after a short illness with his daughters Jackie and Elaine by his side.

Gilbert was born in Richford on July 27th, 1924, to Ernest and Gertrude (Sanborn) Shover. He was the oldest of nine children. He was married to Shirley Gross on Dec 11, 1945. They had six children, and she predeceased him on August 23, 2011.

He worked for former Sweat Comings Co. He was employed at H.K. Webster where he retired from. When he was 17, he was part of the group that helped on retaining wall in St. Albans Bay and was very proud of that. He was a volunteer firefighter for over 50 years with the Richford Fire Department. In his earlier years, he enjoyed golfing, bowling, going to the casino and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He was proud to travel in the Senior bowling tournaments to different states and was also able to catch a few Red Sox games. Gilbert got to experience two total solar eclipses in his life, one at the age of 8, and one just a week ago at age 99.

He is survived by his daughters, Jackie and Elaine; his son, Alan and his wife, Linda; 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brothers, Alexander and John, and his sister, Gloria, and many nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by three daughters, Carole, Linda, and Louise; brothers, Roy and Donald; sisters, Shirley, Geraldine and Emily; two sons-in-law, Richard and Steve.

A graveside service will be held this summer at the Enosburg Center Cemetery.
