Gordon Cheney

April 21, 1925 — February 5, 2026

SWANTON - With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Gordon William Cheney, who departed this life on February 5, 2026, at the age of 100. Gordon exemplified the spirit of community and resilience that defined his century-long journey.

He was born in West Swanton on April 21, 1925 to the late William & Lula (Bradley) Cheney.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, Gordon served his country during World War II, embodying the values of duty and sacrifice. After his military service, he returned to Swanton, where he dedicated his life to various roles, most notably as a bus driver and tow truck driver for Don Bell. He later found fulfillment as the maintenance professional of Missisquoi Valley Union High School, leaving a lasting impact on the students and staff who came to know him.

Gordon was a lover of the outdoors, finding joy in hunting, fishing, and trapping. In his later years, Gordon enjoyed playing cards and bingo games. He often spent time at the senior center, where he built friendships that lasted a lifetime. Even into his 100th year, Gordon remained fiercely independent, tending to his gardens, mowing his lawn, blowing snow, and taking his daily walks around the community.

He is survived by his children, Wendy Cheney Campbell, David Cheney, and Alan Cheney; his grandchildren, Kelly Faulkner, Stephanie Ouimette, Kimberly Faulkner, James Faulkner, Rachel Cheney, and Christopher Cheney; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and friends in the community. In addition to his parents, Gordon was predeceased by his wife, Hortence (Duprey) Cheney; his daughter, Gail Courville; grandsons, Gordon Faulkner, and Shawn Courville; great grandson, Tyler Faulkner; and his siblings, Eldora Delaney, Mercedes Belrose, and Arnold Cheney.
