John M. Cavazos unexpectedly passed on April 25, 2026 in Sarasota, Fl. His parents were Francisco G. Cavazos (died 2015) and Dorcas L. Cavazos (died 2004). He leaves a sister, Cathy and brother, Robert. He was a beloved Uncle to his nephews and niece. John was a constant professional, devoted to his work as a journalist, writer and news manager/producer.
John graduated from Missisquoi Valley Union High School. He played on the baseball team all four years, went to the All-State Music Festival and played in the All New England Orchestra. He was an avid drummer and lover of music.
John graduated in 1984 from Plattsburgh State University with a degree in communications and journalism. While there, he was a part of the college news radio, his time there led him to a career in broadcast journalism.
John had a long career as a sports director, news director and broadcast manager/producer working in Burlington, Vt. Boston, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Sarasota, Fl. He was forever idolized as the cool uncle by his young nephews who proudly watched him deliver the sports on the ABC Channel 22 news nightly as they were kids.
In addition to his professional career, John was an avid collector. Specifically, of sports and music memorabilia. While most kids were putting baseball cards in their bike tires, he was busy putting them in protective cases. He amassed a collection of baseball cards and music albums to make the antique's roadshow jealous. There isn't a Sports Illustrated issue or Carl Yastrzemski card that he wasn't friends with.
John had a big heart. In the late 90's during a family medical emergency he took his nephews from a hospital room to Fenway Park, an unforgettable memory and a way for them to have some happiness during a difficult time. They loved him.
His time in Harlingen, Tx. Was meaningful professionally but also provided him opportunity to become re-acquainted with his Mexican-American heritage in the Rio Grande Valley. Maria Cavazos was his aunt who meant the world to him and he spent lots of wonderful time with her.
He will be missed.
Visitation hours will begin at the Goss Life Celebration Home in Swanton, Vt. on August 1 at 10am. A short service will begin at 11am, moving to burial at the Riverside Cemetery in Swanton. He will be laid to rest with his parents, whom he adored.
