ALBURGH – Joseph E. Sprano Jr., age 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at his home.
He was born in Colchester on February 7, 1942 to the late Florence Katherine (Russin) and Joseph Sprano Sr.
He grew up in Winooski, where he developed a strong work ethic from a young age. It was during his days in Winooski that Joe met the love of his life, Claire Cote. They bonded over their shared passion for dance, and Claire fell for Joe's mischievous look and piercing blue eyes. On July 27, 1963, they exchanged vows and began a beautiful journey together. Their love blossomed as they raised their two children, Joseph III and Michelle in Essex.
In 1988, drawn to a slower-paced and fulfilling life, Joe and Claire made the decision to move to Alburgh after purchasing a charming farm. Joe's love for the outdoors truly flourished as he embraced the farm life wholeheartedly. He found solace in hunting, camping, and spending time in nature. A cup of coffee was never far from his hand as he worked tirelessly on the farm, creating a haven for his loved ones.
Beyond his devotion to farming, Joe had a zest for life. He enjoyed watching classic westerns and listening to the soul-stirring melodies of classic country music. His outgoing and friendly nature endeared him to all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Joe's infectious laughter and good-natured teasing brought joy to countless gatherings, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
One of Joe's greatest passions was engaging in team penning and sorting competitions alongside his loving family. In his younger days, he cherished his coon hunting expeditions with his cherished hounds, particularly with his award-winning hound, Sadie, who became an inseparable companion.
Joe enjoyed big game expeditions with his son, Joe III and dear friend Kurt. From Caribou to Elk and Deer they admired their time together in the woods. Joe was a mentor and biggest supporter of his grandson, Walker, and their hunting endeavors together, they spent much of their time together in the woods.
Joe will be forever remembered as a hardworking and compassionate man who found fulfillment in the simple joys of life. He encompassed strength, kindness, and resilience, never complaining despite the challenges he faced. Joe's legacy lives on through the memories he leaves behind and the imprints of love he instilled in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Claire Sprano of Alburgh; children, Joe Sprano III of Alburgh and his daughter Emma, and her mother Lacey Ahrent; and Michelle and her children, Walker and Karrie Ayer of Addison; siblings, Bill & Linda Sprano of TN, Sandra & Cosino Lomartire of Colchester, Michael Sprano of Williamstown, and Albert & Laurie Sprano of Richmond; sister-in-law, Sheila Sprano of St. Albans; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; close friends Ray & Carol Normandin, Stuart & Sandra Smith and Frank & Brenda Montani; and his countless hunting buddies throughout the years.
