Lindsey Gates

September 24, 1953 — April 26, 2024

ENOSBURG FALLS - Lindsey Earl Gates A.K.A Papa passed away from cancer in room #15 at Northwestern Medical Center on 4.26.2024.

Lindsey was born in St. Albans VT to Earl and Hyla Gates on 9.24.1953. He grew up on the family farm in Bakersfield VT. He attended Bakersfield Common School and then middle school at Brigham Academy and Enosburg Falls High School where he enjoyed the athletic experience more than the classroom experience. He liked to reminisce about farming with his parents, brother Sam, sister Melissa and nephew Hobie and playing sports with all his childhood friends. He never failed to mention how fast he was and tell the story about the two man outfield!

Lindsey lived a full life of work and play! He never complained about going to work and found comfort in the routine and working along others. He was always proud of a job well done! In his life time he worked many jobs: farmer, bartender, owner of a small tool and rental company, managed a garbage route with his brother Sam, Foreman of the public works dept. in the Village of Enosburg, machine operator for Rick Greene, many construction jobs and just recently retired after 21 years as a Foreman at Dew Construction. He also proudly volunteered for the Bakersfield and Enosburg Fire Dept.

When he wasn't working, Lindsey was busy enjoying being a dad and grandfather, attending the many sporting events and extra curricular activities of his 6 children, 15 grandchildren and extended family.

In his free time he would be found in the woods hunting, sugaring, cutting wood or in the garage building or fixing something. He also enjoyed riding around in the mustang and in his younger days playing softball. When he did sit down you would find him in front of the TV with his best bud Ollie watching the New York Giants, Boston Red Sox or any golf match.

He looked forward to the annual Luc Gates Golf Tournament, growing and carving pumpkins, putting together many Christmas stockings, trips to Maine and Lake Placid and Youth Weekend! If there was an event that had a dance floor you could find him sweating and moving and grooving with anyone who was willing to dance with him!

A few fun facts about Lindsey:

1. He was bilingual - but you only heard him use French when he was swearing at a piece of equipment.

2. He believed being on time was being early.

3. He once got a perm and the chemicals and sun bleached his hair - so he spent the summer being a curly headed blonde.

4. His first and last truck was a green Ford.

5. Lindsey was happiest when others were happy.

Lindsey will be missed by many: his children and grandchildren Lesha Rasco her children Emeri and Luc Rasco, Lynn Goldenberg (Gregg) their children Haley, Madison and Lindsay Sloan Goldenberg, Tiffany Mayo (Danny) her children Carter, Mason, Ayden, Eli and Ally Mayo, Johanna Gervais (Zach) their children Ella, Drake and Malcolm Gervais, and Seth Gates (Kathryn) their children Rynlee and Remy Gates and Frankie, Reagan and Arleigh Richard. His partner of 20 plus years, Sally Bashaw and her children and grandchildren Travis Bashaw (Stacey) their son Brayden Bashaw, Damon Bashaw (Betsy), and Ashley Goodwin (Cody) their children Addyson Longe, Brielle and Liam Goodwin. Many nieces, nephews, and the Demers, Plouff, Cosgrove and Soule families.

It brings us comfort knowing he is joining his parents Earl and Hyla, brother Sam, sister Melissa, son in law Joel, and son Lindsey "Luc"!
