In Loving Memory of Mathilde Maskell

Mathilde Maskell, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family in the early hours of August 4,2026.

Mathilde was born on May 26,1936, in Czechoslovakia. During her childhood, her family was forced to relocate to Germany, where she grew up enduring and overcoming some very difficult times. As a young woman, her path crossed with Roy Maskell while he was serving in the United States Army. Love followed, and after years of traveling the world for the military, they settled back in Vermont near Roy's family to establish their roots and raise a family of their own.

A woman of immense skill and artistry, Mathilde was well-known throughout the community for her exquisite, meticulous upholstery work, which she shared for many years. But perhaps even more widely celebrated was her kitchen. Mathilde was legendary for her famous apple bread, and authentic German desserts and cookies. She shared her baked goods generously-not just during the holidays, but all year long. There is simply no way to count the countless loaves of bread and cakes she poured her heart into and gifted to friends, neighbors, and loved ones over the decades.

Beyond her talents, Mathilde will be fondly remembered for her wonderful, no-nonsense attitude. She never left you guessing where you stood-she said exactly what was on her mind, a trait that brought authenticity, humor, and endless warm memories to everyone who knew her. Those memories will continue to bring a smile to the faces of all who were blessed to cross her path.

Mathilde was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Maskell; her granddaughters, Tonya and Mandy; and her great-granddaughter, Cerrenitti.

She is survived by her devoted children: daughter Wanda Bushey and her husband Jeffery; daughter Dolly Lussier and her husband Gilbert; daughter Sally Young and her partner Shaun; daughter in law Shelly Tatro son Edgar Maskell; and daughter Karen Maskell. Matilde's legacy also lives on through her 5 other cherished grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In respecting Mathilde's wishes there will be no public memorial services. There will be a celebration of life for close friends and family only on August 9, 2026 at the VFW in Saint Albans, 2pm to 5pm.
