Nancy L. Hazen

November 19, 1925 — December 12, 2019

SHELBURNE - Nancy Lang Hazen, age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at the Arbors in Shelburne.

Nancy was born in Bellows Falls, VT on November 19. 1925 to Dr. Herbert & Sophie (Page) Hutchins. She was the youngest of 10 children.

Nancy attended Lyndon Institute earning her High School Diploma. Nancy was a proud member of the Lyndon Institute Class of 1943, and attended Homecoming Weekends well into her 80s. On August 21, 1955 Nancy and Arlington were married. They were married in a Double Wedding with Howard & Helen ONeil, who were lifelong friends. Arl and Nancy settled in New Haven and Middlebury, VT for many years where they raised their 4 children. Arl & Nancy were married for nearly 60 years. In retirement they lived in their beloved Champlain Islands for many years.

Nancy tirelessly volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Drives in Middlebury and donated every time she was eligible. She was a member of the Vermont Order of Eastern Star and Altrusa. Nancy also donated time and energy to her Church. The Womens Group, fundraisers, pot luck dinners were staples of her life.

Nancy worked at Middlebury College for 15 years as a Secretary. In her spare time, she typed up Student Theses and final reports for Middlebury College Students. In 1978, Arl and Nancy relocated to Shelburne, VT and Nancy began work at UVM. Her employment at UVM enabled her children to attend UVM tuition free, and she was very proud of that. Nancy retired from UVM and she and Arl moved to South Hero. Nancy and Arl wintered in Phoenix, AZ for many years. They welcomed many family and friends fleeing the cold of Vermont.

Nancy adored her family dogs, and cats. Nancy was a genuinely kind person, and will be remembered as a wonderful Mother. Nancy loved her family dearly, and was a person of deep faith. She was born and raised an Episcopalian, and retained her affiliation until she passed. Nancy became an affiliate member of the Methodist Church when she married Arl. Nancy developed a passion for writing in her later years. She wrote lovely poems and stories that were shared and saved. Each poem or story was written in her beautiful handwriting. Nancy was a fabulous cook and baker. Her bread, pies, and casseroles will be missed. Her children fondly remember their birthday dinners, ending with their favorite cake. Of course, everything was made from scratch. Nancy was an expert in canning and freezing the bounty of Arls fabulous garden crops.

Nancys family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the entire staff at the Arbors in Shelburne for the exceptional care, and love, they offered to Nancy the past 7 years.

She is survived by her children, Holly Allen and her husband David of Peterborough, NH, Jean Lawrance of Jeffersonville, Arlington Hazen II and his wife Susan of Essex, and Allison Hazen of South Burlington.
