Roger Gingras

March 27, 1938 — August 30, 2025

SWANTON - Roger Norman Gingras (1938-2025), age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 30th, 2025, after a short battle with Alzheimer's.

He resided in Swanton, VT before his move to Homestead senior living in St Albans, Vermont. He was born in Fairfax VT, on March 27, 1938, to Alpherie and Cecile Gendron Gingras.

Roger served 4 years as an Aviation Machinist in the Navy, from September 11, 1957 - September 8, 1961. He started his Navy Career and went to Great Lakes, Illinois naval station for his eight-week basic training, then to Oklahoma for propellor school for one week, and lastly spent six weeks at the Turbine Jet School in Memphis, TN. He was 8th out of his class, so the top 10 were able to pick where they wanted to be stationed. He chose South Weymouth, Mass.

Roger married Theresa B. Fournier in a ceremony in Hawaii in 1985. They spent 21 years together before she passed on June 5, 2006.

He was the grocery manager for Grand Union for 44 years. He loved his job and was always heard whistling in the aisles while he worked. Roger was very handy and could fix and repair just about anything. He loved tinkering at his home on Woods Hill Road in Swanton.

Roger is survived by his children who he was extremely proud of, Rachael Choiniere (Duane) of Highgate, VT, Karen Capsey (Mark) of Highgate, VT, Shari Bashaw (Joe) of St. Albans, VT, Timothy Gingras of Highgate, VT, Todd Gingras (Angel) of Highgate, VT, and stepdaughter Ann Marie Civetti (Paul) of Derby VT.

Roger's grandchildren meant so much to him, and he enjoyed every minute he spent with them. Brooke Smith, Carissa Rushlow, Colin Capsey, Ezra Bashaw, Isaac Bashaw, Whitney Bates, Travis and Dillon Gingras, Torrie Dearborn, and Brett and Chad Civetti. He also leaves nine great grandchildren: Merritt, Carrigan, Ellis, Teagan, Kinley, Paxton, Connor, Dominic, and Parker.

Roger is preceded in death by five siblings, Ronald Gingras (Infant), Romeo Gingras (Thelma), Rene Gingras (Helen) and Flossie Copeland (Bernard). He is also preceded by his parents, Alpherie and Cecile, and son-in-law Jim Bashaw.

Roger constantly had a smile on his face and would always lend a hand. He will always be remembered for his kindness, strength, and his cheerfulness.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to his niece Susan Pickard who maintained a very close relationship to Roger and gave so much support to the family. The family also wants to express a sincere gratitude to Homestead Senior Living where Roger lived his last 20 months and felt right at home. He enjoyed the happy faces and love he received from their amazing staff. We also like to thank the support of Bayada Hospice for the support during his final few months.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Jim Bashaw Cancer and Catastrophic Fund at Northwestern Medical Center, 133 Fairfield St. St Albans, VT 05478
