HIGHGATE - Ronald Nichols, age 79, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
He was born on November 1, 1946 in St. Albans to the late Ralph & Lorraine (Gagne) Nichols.
Ron lived a life deeply rooted in the soil of his family's farm in Highgate. Milking cows at just 10 years old, he embraced the calling of agriculture, dedicating his life to the dairy industry. He was proud to have won the prestigious award for Dairy Farmer of the year in 1980. Ron was not just a farmer; he was a cherished member of his community and a devoted lifelong member of St. Louis Catholic Church. As a Eucharistic Minister and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, he enriched the lives of many, exemplifying faith and service. His work ethic continued even after selling the cows as he transitioned into trucking for local farmers and assisting with field work, always ready to lend a helping hand.
His family was the centerpiece of his life. Ron took immense pride in watching his grandchildren grow and followed them throughout their endeavors. He eagerly anticipated the arrival of his first great-grandchildren, twin girls, expected soon. In his later years, Ron enjoyed riding his gator around the farm, and visiting his neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Aleta (Reynolds) Nichols; their son, Kevin Nichols and his wife Marybeth; grandchildren, Brendan Messier and his fiancé Juliana Turner, Nicholas Messier, Kyleigh Nichols and her fiancé Jayden Tilton, Erika Nichols and her fiancé Keegan Zier, and Gavin Nichols and his significant other Cayley Renaudette; siblings-in-law, Ronald Reynolds, Candace Brady and her husband Richard, Wendy Mitchell and her husband David, Cheryl Spaulding and her husband Bruce, and Debbie Doig and her husband William; brother-in-law, David Jones; and several nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents, Ron was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Kimberly Messier and her husband Jamie; and sisters-in-law, Donna Jones, and Maxine Reynolds.
Friends & family are invited to Ron's life celebration to include visitation from 4-7:00 PM on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, VT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday April 24, 2026 at St. Louis Catholic Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate, VT. Interment will follow in St. Louis Cemetery.
