Stanley Wayne Wright
Born at home in East Enosburg on October 28, 1943, the middle son of Donald and Ruth (Stanley) Wright. He and his brothers Carroll & Gary were the seventh generation born on the Wright farm.
He attended the one room schoolhouse in Stoneville and was in the class of 1961 at Enosburg Falls High School. He graduated from Vermont Technical College in 1963 with his good friends and fellow hell raisers Dave Beebe and Bobby Starr!
After working in sales, IBM, and the dairy industry he decided to try his hand at raising veal, building a barn specifically for veal calves. Stanley was the first veal farmer in New England, later building a second, larger barn with his success due to his dogged business sense and exceptional animal husbandry skills.
Stanley and his wife, Penny Sheperd, who he married in 1970 raised veal for 29 years. Money was scarce so they built a small apartment above the "old" barn, hay for their horses right outside their door as it was the haybarn. Stanley and Penny added to the apartment as the babies were born, Mary Katherine, Ellen Sheperd & Douglass Ruth. They saved the name Charlie for a boy, just in case! (Ended up being the dog, Charlie Brown.)
There were always horses, a couple of riding horses, then early in the 80's a team of Belgians - then more Belgians, which became a breeding program. He grew up working horses and continued this passion throughout his life, using horses for logging, sugaring, and getting some of the 80 cords of wood needed to heat the barns and homes. (After purchasing a neighboring farm in 1982 he added a dairy herd with an excellent production record.) Showing Belgians throughout New England and northern New York was a successful family passion until the girls went off to college.
Stanley loved Enosburg, serving his hometown in many ways. He was elected to the school board several terms which included the addition to the high school and the Cold Hollow Career Center. As a select board member he was known for being outspoken, concise, fiscally conservative (We might say frugal). Stanley was not afraid to stand alone or with the majority for what he believed. If he was wrong he would always apologize, even if years had passed.
Stanley loved people, mentoring many of the younger folks so they could have support to go out on their own to be successful. He greatly enjoyed visiting and laughing with anyone young or old! He also loved riding and driving horses, looking at a good horse, and to dance!
He is survived by his wife, Penny; his daughters and their families: Mary and Kirk Fenoff, their children, Derek, Megan and Giselle and their families. Ellen and Paul Brady and their daughters, Olivia & Jillian. Douglass and Jacob Kane, their children, Jordan & Garet. Brothers, Carroll and Gary his wife Debbie Wright. His very close first cousins Paul and Laurel Stanley, Terry Wright, and Donna Couture. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews and their families, cousins and generations of extended family whom he enjoyed greatly. He is predeceased by his parents, Donald & Ruth (Stanley) Wright; sister-in-law, Darlene Wright; niece, Brenda Goodhue and her infant son Ethan; and his cousins, Winona and Earl Stanley, and Glen Wright.
