HIGHGATE - Stephen Robert Ploof, age 70, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026 at his home in Highgate. Stephen was a proud resident of Highgate Center, where he dedicated many years to serving his community.
He was born July 1, 1956 in St. Albans to the late Robert & Sylvia (Nye) Ploof.
A 1975 graduate of Missisquoi Valley Union High School, Stephen went on to marry his beloved wife, Janice (Currier), on April 15, 1983. Together, they created a warm and loving home that served as a gathering place for family and friends. Stephen's devotion to his family was unwavering; he took immense pride in his grandchildren and cherished every moment spent supporting them in their endeavors.
For many years, Stephen worked as the road foreman for the Town of Highgate, a role he held until his retirement in 2018. Though Stephen was a man of few words, his actions spoke volumes about his commitment to his community and the people he loved. He found joy in simple pleasures - family gatherings, rides in his Jeep looking for deer, watching old westerns. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing broomball and going deer hunting.
In retirement, Stephen and Janice embraced travel, exploring the country through memorable road trips and cherished trips to Las Vegas and Alaska.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Ploof; two children, Tonya (Peter) Mason, and Troy (Jennifer) Parah; beloved grandchildren, Hunter, Colby (Lizzie), Kendalyn, Molly, and Emma; siblings, Alvin (Joyce) Ploof, Keith Ploof, Daniel (Joan) Ploof, and Gary (Jenny) Ploof; siblings-in-law, David Currier, Laurie (LaWayne) Clary, and Brian (Missy) Lampman; and many nieces & nephews. Stephen was predeceased by his parents, Robert & Sylvia Ploof; in-laws, Chester & Beverly Lampman; and sister-in-law, Lise Key.
In keeping with Stephen's wishes, an informal celebration of his life for his family and close friends will be held from 12-3:00 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2026 at the home of Gary & Jenny Ploof, 3956 St. Armand Road, Highgate Center, VT. A light lunch will be served.
For those who wish, contributions in Stephen's memory may be made to Highgate Parks & Recreation, P.O Box 189 Highgate Center, VT 05459.
