FRANKLIN - Valerie J. Shepard, age 71, passed away on Friday, May 16th, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on August 17, 1953 in St. Albans to Robert and Emma Jean (Buckley) Shepard.
Valerie was a beloved educator and cherished member of her community. She was a proud graduate, earning her Master's Degree and compassionately serving as a teacher for over 36 years at Franklin Central School where she retired, and then returned shortly afterward to continue helping students as a tutor. Her passion for education and ability to connect with her students earned her several awards, including Teacher of the Year and Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Valerie's influence extended far beyond the classroom; she not only shaped young minds but also nurtured their hearts, expressing the very essence of compassion and determination. Valerie's journey through life, including her courageous battles with cancer, highlighted her strength and the connections she established with former students. During her illness, she was surrounded by the love and care of those she had once taught, which brought her great comfort and joy.
In addition to her commitment to education, Valerie proudly served her country in the United States Army, a testament to her strong and resilient spirit. She found joy in nurturing her vegetable and flower gardens, taking great delight in the beauty of nature, and had a special fondness for hummingbirds. Valerie found peace in her seasonal site at Brookside Campground, where she enjoyed the calm that surrounded her. She was also passionate about her beloved dogs, engaging them in obedience and agility training, which brought her much enjoyment. She took immense pride in her family, particularly in the achievements of her grandchildren, whom she supported wholeheartedly by attending all their concerts and drama events.
She is survived by her husband, John Taylor; son, Christopher Shepard and his wife Beth-Ann; grandchildren, Sean, Katelyn, and Jacob; siblings, Roberta Mardocco and husband Marc, Laurie Shepard and wife Laura Tobin; niece, Jana Mardocco; nephew, Aaron Mardocco. Valerie was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Emma Jean Shepard, and nephew, Colin Mardocco.
